Anyone here tried this? I've hitchhiked a fair amound but nothing of this scale yet. This spring I'm travelling from Barrie (not quite Toronto but close) to Vancouver over a 2 week period with stopovers in every province to visit friends and family. I'd love to hear any similar experiences, maybe places I wouldn't want to miss, tips, hidden treasures...
So far here's my plans:
day 1 goal: Barrie to Thunder Bay (or as close to it as possible)
day 2 goal: Thunder Bay to Winnipeg, where I'll visit family for about 5 days
day 8 goal: Winnipeg to ??????? <----help me out here guys, what is there to see in SK
I'm also stopping in Calgary, Banff, Cranbrook, Fernie, Nelson, then probably taking the southern route towards the ocean (Osoyoos is somewhere I'd like to stop).
Anyways, any feedback, experiences, ideas would be more than welcome.

Re: How many rides?: Toronto to Vancouver by thumb
Sat, January 21, 2006 - 12:35 PMIf you stay along the trans canada highway, the best way to atually see Sask is to just drive through it. or stop on Moose Jaw, a small bug "funky" little town.
I like Sask so I don't mean it badly. The beatuy of Sask fomr my point of view is its open space and tiny towns.
Good luck

Sun, April 30, 2006 - 7:09 PMSouthern Saskatchewan is lovely with rolling hills and the badlands that stretch into the dakotas and montana - difficult to navigate if you stray to far off the trans Canada but easy enough to be picked up... -

Re: How many rides?: Toronto to Vancouver by thumb
Tue, May 23, 2006 - 12:38 AMi went from quebec to vancouver and stopped quite a few times on the way, i never went to toronto on my way to vancouver soo from where i went, ottawa to van, it took me a crapload of rides to get from ottawa to north bay, only because there were so many small towns and then in north bay i got a ride straight to winnipeg. Stayed there for a couple of days and i got a ride out to brandon manitoba from a friend and then got picked up by some old train hoppers, and ya the story continues, but if id say for a good estimate, maybe 20 rides or soo, i did pretty good, and got some really good rides:P some people even stopped for me before i stuck my thumb out, and some crazyyyyyy stuff happened too
in brandon i was on the side of the road and me being the spoiled hitch hiker that i am, waiting an hour was just too much for me and i was seriously in need of leaving manitoba, soo i yelled into the air " universe!!!! i neeeed a siggnnn, help me out here!!!" right then i looked next to my bag and guitar, there suddenly was a piece of cardboard that i hadnt seen when i got there, and i said quietly under my breath "regina" cause thats where i wanted to go, and on the other side of the piece of cardboard, it said regina :P this guuy picked me up about ten minutes later and dropped me off on a turn off point in the middle of nowhere (any ride further my way is good, as long as i had a tent and food and water id be ok) and then im stuck there for around three hours..... hehe, i got soo mad at the manitobans, they all looked fat and angry, and then two dudes with bc plates pull up. sWeeet, turns out they work in prince george bc and are headed to regina ............. the ride was cool and i got to expperience the energy of old hardcore train hoppers and hitchers. The old guy to my right used to survive off of playing guitar in bars for his keep and a bit of food, and the old guy to my left had train hopped all over the country.. pretty cool guys. This other guy that picked me up out of banff told me that when he was hitching in new brunswick, he got picked up by a millitary dude who got high off of nitrus oxide the whole trip !!@ you hear some crazy stories hitching, and well, its magic if you ask me.. Ive had some crazy good luck hitch hiking and never had a bad experience. there was one guy who was pretty weird once, but i just wasnt clear as to what kinda of person i wanted to pick me up (i usually do a song and dance and ask for a certain type of person before i stick my thumb out) Its a magical thing standing there on the highway, going somewhere not really too sure whos gonna pick you up or when, its like being caught in the ebb and flow of universal tides of love and energy. you learn a lot, and just dont be afraid
i know this post is a bit late, but it might be cool for some people to read
