visa for an american traveling through canada

hi everyone.

I was wondering if anyone knew the deal with how long one can stay in canada without a visa? I heard six months, but when i called the canadian consulate today, the woman told me it would be up to the person at the border, who would ask me some questions and then tell me, two weeks, or three months, or six months . . .

does anyone know the real deal, or the magic password? I'm going to be working at a yoga center on salt spring island, and then WWOOFing . . .

thank you very much.
WAWA ONT.

1) STAY AWAY FROM WAWA ONTARIO! seriously if you get a ride that is going to drop you in wawa wait for another ride. Wawa is an abys that suck the life force from would be travelers.

2) i did toronto to winipeg in 24 hrs. that was almost non stop i caught a trucker into TO from kenora.

3) winipeg to calgary is about 24 hrs in my various experiences in sask. they do not like hitchhikers. the police do not like hichers, the RCMP do not like hitchhikers and the locals generally do not like ANYONE who is younger than 60 and have never lived on a farm. in broadview sask. the RCMP actually took our water away from us (it was 40degrees that day) and made us stand in the grass (which wouldnt have been so bad if it wasnt the hight of wood tick season) Sask. SUCKS. if you find a truck stop before the border try and get a ride straight through. seriously the only thing other than ALOT of nothing is a hill with a tree on it (i am not kidding, it is called tree hill)

4) Alberta is decent for traveling if you are headed towards edmonton the longest ive ever had to wait is about 2 hrs, on a rainy night with low traffic

5) west of calgary is hitchhikers paradise. friendly people and interesting everything. B.C. is hard to go wrong with. but be careful if you get a trucker arround Golden B.C. make sure they havent been driving more than 12 hrs. once you see the road coming from Golden you will understand.

6) oh yeah Sask. REALLY SUCKS ive bussed accross the last 2 time i travelled because i hate it SOOOO much.

Festival d`été

So, recently (as today is the last day) I had the chance to work in the Summer festival in Québec city! What a hoot!

It is soo much fun! 10 days of great live music, buskers, artisans, promotions, restraunts overflowing untill late into the night, clubs packed, parks full of picnicers and partiers...great for everyone. Seriously, and not speaking French is not a big issue. Especially in the summer time, it`s not as easy to get by as in Montréal if your not at least a bit linguistic, but it`s totally possible!

They blocked off a section of Grande Allee, and Rue St. Jean every evening, and all day every weekend for the festival. It was nuts! There were some big name (albeit older) bands but some new faces too, ei, Scorpions, Live, Twisted Sister (I kid you not) and DJ Champion. Plus a cool punk show, etc.

If anyone got to go there this year, I was the girl driving the giant Ford truck with the Fusion in the back full of popcorn! If not, hope you can make it there next year, QC really does festivals right! This whole drining on the street thing, it rocks!! Plus, all the police were in great moods, their there just to keep things from getting rowdy, which it dosn`t seem to get over there. Cool, laid back, fun.

Cheers!

How many rides?: Toronto to Vancouver by thumb

Anyone here tried this? I've hitchhiked a fair amound but nothing of this scale yet. This spring I'm travelling from Barrie (not quite Toronto but close) to Vancouver over a 2 week period with stopovers in every province to visit friends and family. I'd love to hear any similar experiences, maybe places I wouldn't want to miss, tips, hidden treasures...

So far here's my plans:
day 1 goal: Barrie to Thunder Bay (or as close to it as possible)
day 2 goal: Thunder Bay to Winnipeg, where I'll visit family for about 5 days
day 8 goal: Winnipeg to ??????? <----help me out here guys, what is there to see in SK

I'm also stopping in Calgary, Banff, Cranbrook, Fernie, Nelson, then probably taking the southern route towards the ocean (Osoyoos is somewhere I'd like to stop).
Anyways, any feedback, experiences, ideas would be more than welcome.

"Jesus, why is that fat white bearded man going squirming down chimneys, sneaking around peoples crucified, dieing, brightly decorated trees, and leaving all that meaningless, corporate Earth-raping junk lying around on your birthday?"

"Oh, shut up and pass the eggnog!"

<> - <> - <>

I woke up this morning
all breezy and free,
and thought to myself
well this feels like me!

I thought and I pondered,
and then thought some more;
what's with this world,
what is the score?

In this way I sat
lightly tapping my knee,
all safe and secure
whilst sipping my tea,

when a wish came to me!

I think it a good one,
why don't you see:

May this up coming year of
two thousand and five,
be for us all

without war,

and alive!

<> - <> - <>

I wish for you all the Wisdom and Knowledge that will ensure you of a Peaceful, Happy future on this coming holy Solstice time, when the darkness passes to Light, and we again see that the Sun will indeed continue to feed our flowering Earth, and bring the warmth of the "gods" into our bones.

Sweet giving Love, Holy Solstice Light,
Serene Christmas Happiness,
and to all a good night,

Adrian

Happy Winter Solstice everyone!

Canada is arguably the most beautiful country in the world, however nobody has anything to say about travelling through it?

I used to live in Canada and loved every minute of it. I was a nature tour guide in Ontario while attending college. If I could've lived off the measily salary guides make up there, I would have stayed. However... there were bigger callings.

I would love to hear about other's experiences in the great North. So... let's here 'em!

Canada top ten

What are the best places to visit in maple leaf land? Here are a few of my suggestions:

1.) Tofino, BC - Great end of the road town on Vancouver Island.
2.) Vancouver, BC- It has everything...big city appeal (clean too), ocean activities & close proximity to mountains.
3.) Banff/Canmore- Banff can get a bit overwhelmed with tourists in the summer. Canmore is a great alternative and is only a 30 minute drive away.
3.) Calgary...for the Calgary Stampede of course.
4.)Torronto Islands- A great view of the city from afar.
5.)Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia- amazing views and lots of hiking.

That is a start..anyone want to add to the highlights?
